How is Filmmaking Like Drum Corps?

Making any kind of art is time consuming and audiences often have trouble?understanding?what really goes into the process of creating something that you are truly proud of. I’ve often said that the two hardest things that I’ve ever done in my life were marching in drum corps and making a movie (which happens to be about drum corps as well.) There are so many parallels between the two activities. A filmmaker friend of mine alerted me to?this... Read More

Amplifying our Message

Our movie is complete and it’s starting to get noticed by fans of the marching arts around the USA. We’re coming up on the four year anniversary of when we conceived the initial idea for the film. It seems like such a long time ago because we’ve been through so much from the idea stage, to the test shoot phase, raising our initial funds, shooting, editing, wrangling the music licenses, more editing, to a finished film. In a lot of... Read More

Special Screening in Edmonton, Canada

Members of “Vintage” during the 2014 YEG Pride Parade While many people associate drum and bugle corps with the United States, there are a tremendous number?of marching arts organizations in other countries around the world. During a critical time in our?fundraising efforts?to cover the music licensing costs in our documentary film, we were contacted by two groups in Edmonton, Canada that were interested in having a special screening.... Read More

Thank you for funding “The Way We Were”!

We would like to thank all the generous contributors to the crowdfunding campaign for the song “The Way We Were”. This was the first song of the “Battle of the Decades” challenge which represents the Madison Scouts from the 1970s. The following contributors have made it possible for this particular song to be in our drum corps movie: ? Cielle Clemenceau ? Zachary Foster ? Kristin Mathews ? Michael Garvin ? Dennis Stone ? Joseph... Read More

BATTLE OF THE DECADES!

Which decade of the Madison Scouts is the best? Both alumni and fans of the corps have very strong opinions. That’s because they are very passionate about the activity and there’s nothing wrong with that. We’ve decided to pin the different decades of the corps (alumni & fans) against each other to see which one can get a popular Madison Scouts song that appears in our movie funded the fastest. The race started on August 13th... Read More

“Best Documentary” at the FLY Film Festival!

The first film festival screenings of the movie, a new IndieGoGo campaign, and Mr. Smith goes to Indianapolis! Two and a half years ago we started fundraising for the “Scouts Honor: Inside a Marching Brotherhood” project via a campaign on the IndieGoGo website. It was extremely successful and served as the launching off point for the production of the film. The movie has now been shot, edited, and is currently making the film festival... Read More

Why Have the Rewards Disappeared?

The countdown clock on our contribution rewards came to a halt on New Years’ Eve 2013. After nearly two years of fundraising between our initial IndieGoGo campaign and then our own contribution tool on ScoutsHonorMovie.com we raised over $50,000! ?We are extremely grateful to all of our supporters no matter what the size of your contribution. ?It’s not easy to crowdfund a project, but all of our contributors really stepped up to help.... Read More

Reflecting Back & Moving Forward

The end of the year is a good time to assess what’s been achieved and what’s still left to be done. ?We’ve made great strides over the last 12 months with the documentary. While we had the majority of the footage shot before this time last year, none of it had been edited together. Our post production interns were organizing the media by synchronizing audio to video and adding valuable metadata to make it easier to find the necessary... Read More

Nisei Challenge Update

We are thrilled to announce that our goal of $3000 has been reached! The Nisei Ambassadors have matched that dollar for dollar which brings the campaign total to $6000. ?When this campaign was planned we set the end date for Sunday, December 22nd. ?Even though we reached the matching goal we are continuing the campaign through the end date to raise additional funds for finishing the film. Here’s Mac Smith to tell you more about the last days... Read More

The Songs in “Scouts Honor” (so far)

Music is an essential component to “Scouts Honor: Inside a Marching Brotherhood”. In some ways you could categorize the film as a music documentary. ?It certainly follows a music based activity, and while it is essentially a character focused story we take the music very seriously in the film. Part of the idea for this film in the first place were the 5.1 audio recordings that Director/Producer Mac Smith heard from Co-Producer ?John “JT”... Read More
