Introducing our Composer

There are lots of ideas, considerations, decisions, and experiments when it comes to putting a movie together. In many ways a movie and especially a documentary doesn’t become a movie until hundreds of hours are spent in the editing room. ?While “Scouts Honor” is a music centric documentary we’ve always had ideas in the back of our minds about how to supplement the drum corps music with musical score. ?We wanted to contrast the bugles and the percussion with something a bit different.

It was a serendipitous moment when I was researching a short animated film that was in development (to do sound work on). I saw a post from that filmmaker praising a young composer out of Seattle. ?I was curious and clicked on the link that directed me to his website. ?The music that came out of my computer that day was much like what I had imagined for the documentary. ?It had an emotional character of what I was looking for. Pretty soon we were talking to him on the phone. ?We decided the best way to test him out was to have him do a short piece of music for the character profile video about color guard member Jo. With very little direction he hit a home run with his score for Jo’s emotional journey.

Without further adieu, we are pleased to announce the composer for “Scouts Honor: Inside a Marching Brotherhood”, Daniel L.K. Caldwell. This movie is Daniel’s first feature film, and we’ve had a terrific time collaborating with him.

There’s still a tremendous amount of work to do get the movie in shape for our advanced screening at the Madison Scouts’ 75th Celebration (September 28). We hope to see you there!
